Mango Mastani

Mango Mastani!!! The name itself is so enticing. Anything and everything with mango I guess becomes everyone's favorite.
Mast means easy going, care free, lovely, full of fun and frolic.
As the name goes this drink is absolutely simple and easy to make but leaves a party in your mouth with the rich intense mangoey flavors.

Mango mastani is basically a chilled thick milkshake made with mango puree, milk, ice cream & nuts popular among Marathi folks. Mastani is a dessert drink which originated in pune and is a very popular one. It's a speciality of Pune.
During the hot sweltering summers the simple pleasures of life are sipping on chilled beverages. Preparing juices, shakes, smoothies are high on the priority list during the summer months. But during this time we all look for simple recipes also so that we don't have to slog in the kitchen for long hours.

I made this for my Blog hop event where all of us blogger friends decided to post our shares to go with the festival Gudi Padwa.
Gudi Padwa is the first day of Chaitra month that marks the beginning of the New Year according to lunisolar Hindu calendar. It has many names such as Samvatsar Padvo, Yugadi, Ugadi, Cheti Chand.

Gudi Padwa is celebrated as the first day of the year by Maharashtrians and Konkanis.
India is a predominantly agrarian society where agriculture is the main occupation. Gudi Padwa is one of the most famous harvesting festivals of India that marks end of one season and beginning of a new one.
The Gudi is observed at the entrance of Maharashtrain households. So what is it? A Gudi is a stick covered in a bright cloth adorned with brocade or zari that has been topped with sugar crystals, neem leaves, twig of mango leaves and a garland of red flowers. This is covered by a silver or copper pot in an inverted position.
The festivity is observed by people engaging in spring cleaning and wearing new clothes. Families are supposed to begin this day by eating bittersweet leaves of neem tree or a paste which is prepared with neem leaves, jaggery and tamarind. The paste is believed to purify blood and strengthen the body’s immune system.

Though this "Mango Mastani" is not a typical Gudi Padwa recipe but still wanted to share this particular recipe on this occasion for two reasons, One I wanted to make something simple, as I was not in a mood to cook anything heavy and laborious. Second, this particular dish's place of origin is believed to be Pune which is part of Maharashtra so in that light my logic goes very well ;)

Needless to say it was finished in blink of an eye. Such a simple yet scrumptious treat, not only for the eyes but for the tummy, heart and soul too.

INGREDIENTS:

For Milk Shake

Milk- 2 cups (use full fat milk)
Mangoes- 3 large Mangoes (Use a sweeter variety of Mango. I have used Alphonso)
Sugar- 2 tablespoon (adjust according to your taste)
Mango Ice Cream- 4 scoops

For Garnishing

Vanilla Ice Cream- 4 scoops
Pistachios/ Pista- 6-7
Cashews/Kaju- 6-7
Almonds/Badaam- 6-7
Mango cubes- 4 teaspoon
Tutti frutti- 3-4 teaspoon
Glazed cherries- 3-4
Sugar Sprinkles- 2 teaspoon

DIRECTIONS:

Let us start making this scrumptious dish by slicing all the nuts pistachios, almonds and cashews.
keep them aside.

Next, peel and chop the cheeks of 3 large mangoes. Reserve few chopped mango cubes (approximately 4 teaspoon) aside for topping the mastani drink later.

Add the chopped mangoes along with the milk and sugar to the blender. Make sure milk and mangoes are chilled.
Blend to a smooth thick milkshake.

Add the Mango ice cream scoops and blend it again to a smooth shake.
I have added Mango ice cream to the milk shake to make it more flavorful. However, you can give it a skip.

Taste test and if the sugar is less, then you can add more.
If the mangoes are very sweet, you can completely skip the sugar or you can add honey too.

Pour this thick mango milkshake into the serving glasses leaving about half inch space on the top.

Place a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the top of the shake.
Garnish with the sliced dry fruits, tuttu frutti, chopped mangoes, sprinkles and top the garnishes with glazed cherries.
Serve it immediately otherwise ice cream will melt.
Serve it with a spoon as well as straw.
Bon appetite!!!!
